P0410 — Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

minor

What it means

The secondary air injection system pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifold for the first minutes after a cold start so that unburned fuel keeps oxidising and the catalytic converter heats up faster. The ECM verifies the system by watching the oxygen sensor swing lean while the pump runs; if the expected shift does not appear, this code is stored. Apart from the check engine light there are usually no symptoms except a missing pump noise after start-up and higher cold-start emissions.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Failed secondary air pump (seized motor, burnt winding, water ingress)
  2. Stuck or corroded combination valve (one-way valve) in the air line to the manifold
  3. Blown pump relay or fuse, broken pump supply wiring
  4. Carbon-blocked air passages in the cylinder head or exhaust manifold
  5. Leaking, split or disconnected air hose between pump and valve
  6. Faulty vacuum solenoid or damaged vacuum line controlling the combination valve

Can you drive with it?

Safe to drive: the system only works right after a cold start and does not affect running.

This is the generic meaning. What about your car?

The same code has different typical culprits on different engines. Tell the AI your make, model and year — it will rank the causes for your exact car and give you a check order.
