P0217 — Engine Coolant Over Temperature Condition

What it means

The control module has registered a coolant temperature above the safe threshold, that is, the engine is overheating. Many vehicles respond by cutting power, limiting revs or switching to a limp home mode to protect the engine. Continuing to drive risks a blown head gasket, a warped cylinder head and, in the worst case, a seized engine.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Low coolant level because of a leak in a hose, the radiator, the pump seal or the heater core
  2. Thermostat stuck closed, preventing circulation through the radiator
  3. Radiator fan not running: failed fan motor, relay, control module or viscous clutch
  4. Failed water pump, or a slipping, broken or loose drive belt
  5. Radiator or condenser blocked from outside by dirt, or clogged internally with scale and sealant
  6. Air lock in the cooling system after a coolant change, or exhaust gas entering the coolant through a failing head gasket

Can you drive with it?

No. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch the engine off and let it cool down: every further kilometre risks destroying the engine.
