P0230 — Fuel Pump Primary Circuit

What it means

The control module drives the fuel pump relay through the primary circuit and has measured a voltage outside the expected range there: an open circuit, a short to ground or a short to battery voltage. As a result the pump may not run at all, run intermittently or not build up the required pressure. Typical symptoms are a no start condition, stalling at idle and sudden cut outs under load.

Likely causes (most common first)

1. Faulty fuel pump relay or burnt contacts in its socket
2. Blown fuse in the fuel pump circuit
3. Damaged wiring or connector between the control module and the relay, often chafed or corroded
4. Corroded or loose ground point of the fuel pump circuit
5. Failed fuel pump control module on vehicles that use one
6. Failed relay driver output inside the engine control module

Can you drive with it?

Risky: the engine can stall at any moment, including in traffic, so drive only to the nearest workshop or call for a tow.
