What it means

The ECM has detected a general malfunction in the circuit of the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1, the cylinder bank containing cylinder number one. This sensor sits before the catalytic converter and provides the feedback signal used to trim the air-fuel ratio around lambda 1. When its signal is implausible the ECM loses closed loop control, which shows up as a lit MIL, rough running, higher fuel consumption and failed emissions tests.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Aged or contaminated oxygen sensor with a lazy or dead element
  2. Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor letting in fresh air
  3. Damaged sensor wiring melted against the exhaust or chafed on the body
