What it means

With the engine running, the supply voltage at the ECU has stayed below the lower limit, usually under about 10 to 11 V, for longer than the calibrated time. That means the alternator is not covering the electrical load and the battery is being discharged. The warning signs are a battery lamp, dimming headlights, slow window motors and eventually a car that will not restart.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Alternator not charging: worn brushes, failed regulator or shorted diode bridge
  2. Slipping, stretched or broken drive belt, or a seized belt tensioner
  3. Battery unable to hold charge, with a shorted or sulphated cell
  4. Heavy voltage drop across corroded terminals, the main earth strap or the charging cable
  5. Parasitic drain from an aftermarket alarm, amplifier or a module that will not sleep
  6. Blown main fuse or fusible link in the charging circuit

Can you drive with it?

Head straight for a workshop with as many consumers switched off as possible; once the battery is flat the engine will stop and will not restart.
