What it means

The fuel level signal has risen above the calibrated upper threshold, typically over about 4.8 V, which is higher than even a completely full tank can produce. In most sender circuits this is caused by an open circuit, because the pull-up resistor then holds the input at reference voltage. The gauge usually sits pegged at full and the range calculation stops working.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Open circuit in the sender signal wire or its ground return
  2. Disconnected or pushed-out pin in the fuel pump module connector
  3. Worn-through resistive track leaving the wiper without contact
  4. Signal wire shorted to the 5 V reference or to battery positive
  5. Sender of the wrong resistance range fitted after a pump replacement
  6. Failed input stage in the instrument cluster or ECU
