What it means

The ECU receives no valid speed signal, or the signal disappears while the engine is clearly pulling the car. The speed value comes from a Hall or inductive sensor on the gearbox output shaft, or over CAN from the ABS wheel speed sensors. Because engine idle control, torque converter lockup, cruise control and shift points all depend on it, the symptoms are a dead speedometer, no cruise control, harsh shifting and often ABS or ESP lamps as well.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Failed speed sensor on the gearbox or a faulty ABS wheel speed sensor
  2. Open circuit, chafing or corrosion in the sensor harness and connector
  3. Metal debris or oil sludge on the sensor tip distorting the pulses
  4. Damaged reluctor ring or tone wheel with broken or missing teeth
  5. Loss of CAN communication between the ABS module and the ECU
  6. Faulty instrument cluster or ECU that processes the speed signal
