Diagnost vs OBD Auto Doctor: beyond generic OBD2 into manufacturer modules
OBD Auto Doctor is a clean freemium tool that covers the OBD-II standard on Windows, macOS, Linux and phones. Diagnost is Windows-only and free, and it keeps reading after the standard stops.
Most searches for an OBD Auto Doctor alternative come from one of three places: you would rather not pay to unmask the values, you want a tool that does more than the emissions side, or the app reported no faults while a warning light is still on. The first is a pricing question. The third is not about this app at all - it is about where the OBD-II standard ends. Here is the comparison, using what both vendors publish, as of September 2026.
What each one is
OBD Auto Doctor is generic OBD-II diagnostic software published for Windows, macOS and Linux, with iOS and Android apps alongside the desktop builds; the vendor states that some features exist only in the computer software and not in the mobile apps. Per obdautodoctor.com, connection is through an ELM327-based adapter over Bluetooth, WiFi, USB or serial, and Bluetooth LE dongles are supported as well. It reads and clears trouble codes, fetches all available freeze frames rather than just one, tracks readiness monitors including status for the current drive cycle, streams live data and produces reports. Licensing is freemium: the free tier runs without an account and lists every item your car offers while masking the values of paid features. The older Personal and Professional plans have been retired in favor of a Premium plan with no minimum contract.
Diagnost is a free program for Windows 7 through 11, with macOS listed for USB and WiFi adapters. It detects every adapter you have connected - ELM327 over USB, Bluetooth, BLE and WiFi, OBDLink, J2534 devices, K-line cables - and uses the one that is actually on the car, switching automatically if you unplug it. Generic OBD-II is step one; after that it queries every module it can reach over UDS and KWP addressing and over manufacturer addressing for Toyota and Lexus, Nissan and Infiniti, VAG, GM and Opel, Mercedes and Ford. A built-in AI mechanic runs the sweep and explains what it found in plain language.

Where OBD Auto Doctor is stronger
Platforms, first and plainly. It runs on macOS and Linux as a native desktop application, and there is a phone app for when you are standing at the car. We do not match that: Diagnost is a PC program, and there is no Android or iOS build. If your only computer is a MacBook or a Linux workstation, this is the tool that fits your bench, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
Second, the free tier is fair. It shows the whole list of what your car exposes and masks only the values, so you can see exactly what you would be paying for before you pay. Third, the execution inside the standard is genuinely good: all available freeze frames rather than one, readiness monitors split between the current drive cycle and since-clear status, tidy reports. For getting a car through an emissions test, that is more than enough.
Why it only shows engine faults
OBD-II is an emissions regulation, not a diagnostic protocol for the whole car. It obliges the vehicle to answer a fixed set of standardized requests about the powertrain: stored fault codes, freeze frame, readiness monitors, a defined parameter list. Chassis, restraint and body controllers were never in scope, so a generic scan does not address them at all. Nothing in a license tier changes that boundary.
Three different reasons a light stays on after a clear
One, the standard clear command only wipes emissions codes in the engine controller - an ABS or airbag fault has to be cleared in its own module. Two, if the fault is still present, the code is stored again within seconds and it looks like nothing was cleared. Three, permanent DTCs cannot be erased by any tool by design; they clear themselves once the corresponding monitor runs and passes.
Diagnost handles the first case by talking to each module on its own diagnostic address, the same way a dealer tool does: you can clear everything at once or just the airbag module, just ABS, just the cluster. It cannot help with the other two, and neither can any other tool - that is how the standard works.
Where Diagnost is stronger
- All modules, not just the powertrain. Transmission, ABS and stability control, airbags, body, cluster and climate, with codes explained in plain words and per-module clearing.
- Free with nothing masked. No tiers, no subscription, no per-car limit. Download it on the program page.
- Dealer depth on BMW. E chassis 1998-2013 and Mini R50-R56 over K+DCAN, F, G and I chassis over ENET: hidden feature coding with automatic backup and rollback, battery registration, service interval reset, cross-module mileage checks.
- Hybrid battery diagnostics. Cell block voltages, spread and a verdict for Toyota and Lexus hybrids - Prius 2, 3 and 4, Aqua, Auris HSD, CT200h, Camry Hybrid, RX400h and RX450h.
- History by VIN. Sessions are stored and faults compared between visits, so you can tell whether a repair actually held.
- It picks the adapter for you. No port hunting and no manual protocol choice; keep several adapters connected and swap freely.
Which one to pick
Use OBD Auto Doctor if you work on macOS or Linux, if you want the diagnostic tool in your pocket, or if your job is emissions readiness and live engine data done well.
Use Diagnost if the light on the dash is not the check engine light; if you need ABS, airbag or transmission faults; if you would rather not pay to see values; if there is a BMW in the garage. The ELM327 software page walks through the first scan on a cheap adapter, and the in-browser reader will pull engine codes with no install at all if that is all you need today.
Can you run both
Yes, they do not conflict - separate programs, separate files, and the same dongle serves both, though only one connection can hold the port at a time. A practical split is OBD Auto Doctor on the phone or Mac for a quick emissions check, Diagnost on a laptop for the full module sweep and the VIN history. Questions and answers
What does the free OBD Auto Doctor version include?
You can run it without an account. It lists everything your car offers but masks the values behind the paid features, so it works as an honest evaluation tier rather than a crippled one. A subscription unlocks the rest; the vendor notes that the older Personal and Professional plans were replaced by a Premium plan you can cancel at any time.
Does OBD Auto Doctor read ABS and SRS codes?
No. It implements generic OBD-II, and that standard exposes emissions-related powertrain data only. ABS and airbag faults are stored in their own modules on manufacturer protocols, which is where Diagnost continues with UDS and KWP requests.
Why does it only show engine faults?
Because a generic scan asks the vehicle a fixed set of standardized questions defined by the emissions regulation, and every controller outside that scope simply is not addressed. Reaching a chassis or body module means sending a request to that module's own diagnostic address, which is outside the standard by design.
Is the OBD Auto Doctor license worth paying for?
For emissions work on a Mac, a Linux box or a phone, it is a reasonable buy: readiness monitors, multiple freeze frames, live data and reports are all well executed. It will not, however, buy you access to modules the standard does not cover, no matter which tier you pick.
Does it work with any ELM327 clone?
It needs an ELM327-based adapter over Bluetooth, BLE, WiFi, USB or serial, and cheap clones are the usual source of connection complaints because they implement only part of the AT command set. Diagnost identifies the adapter by its ATZ and ATI reply and tells you what it actually is.
Are there alternatives with manufacturer-specific coverage?
That is the gap Diagnost fills: all-module scanning over UDS and KWP plus manufacturer addressing for Toyota and Lexus, Nissan and Infiniti, VAG, GM and Opel, Mercedes and Ford, with dealer-level depth on BMW through K+DCAN and ENET cables.
Does Diagnost run on macOS, Linux or a phone?
Windows 7 through 11 is the main platform, and macOS is listed for USB and WiFi adapters. There is no Linux, Android or iOS version, and that is a genuine point for OBD Auto Doctor rather than something to talk around.
Why did clearing the codes not turn the light off?
Three different things get confused here. A standard clear only wipes emissions codes in the engine controller; an active fault re-sets its code within seconds; and permanent DTCs cannot be cleared by any scan tool at all, since they only age out after the relevant monitor passes.
