Diagnost vs OP-COM: Opel and Vauxhall diagnostics without firmware roulette

First things first: Diagnost does not talk to OP-COM hardware and never will. It reads GM cars over GMLAN with an ordinary ELM327 or OBDLink instead.

Type "opcom clone problems" into a search box and you get thousands of threads with the same three complaints: the driver will not install, the CAN side will not connect, and the unit died after a firmware update. That is why "OP-COM alternative" is now searched almost as often as OP-COM itself. This page explains what is actually going on with the hardware, then shows what you can use instead as of September 2026.

Setting the expectation up front

Diagnost does not work with an OP-COM interface. The protocol between the PC and that device is proprietary and undocumented, and we are not going to reverse-engineer it. If you already own one, it stays tied to its own software. Diagnost detects the device on connection and tells you what to use instead.

Who is who

OP-COM is an interface plus software package developed by Hidro-Build Kft. of Budapest, Hungary; the official site is op-com.hu. The software reads and clears fault codes, shows live data, runs output tests, and adds immobilizer support, key and remote fob programming, and variant coding changes on control units. The vendor lists Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 in both 32 and 64 bit. The product is split into a Professional version and five Basic packages grouped by model family — Astra, Vectra, Corsa, vans and SUVs, and a separate CAN-diagnostics package. Vehicle coverage runs from roughly 1990 to 2017.

Diagnost is free software for Windows 7 through 11 that is tied to no specific cable. It finds every adapter you have connected — ELM327 over USB, Bluetooth, BLE or WiFi, OBDLink, J2534 devices, K-line cables — and picks the one that is actually on a car. Any make is in scope: besides Opel and Chevrolet that means BMW, Toyota, Mercedes, Ford, VW Group, Korean and Chinese cars.

The firmware question, answered honestly

Genuine units are sold through a list of authorized distributors. Almost everything on the marketplaces is a copy, and the copies are not equivalent to each other. Teardowns and long forum threads all land on the same conclusion: the version number printed on the case tells you nothing, the chip inside decides everything. Boards turn up with a genuine PIC18F458, with substitute microcontrollers, and with counterfeit FTDI parts in the USB section. What that silicon is determines which board revisions are supported, whether the CAN side comes up at all, and whether the device can be reflashed without dying.

That is also where the "dead after update" reports come from. The online update assumes genuine hardware; on a clone it can write firmware the chip cannot run and erase the bootloader on the way out. There is no software fix for that state. The practical rule that survives every thread: if you cannot confirm the microcontroller by opening the case, do not flash anything, and never take the online update.

Then there is the operating system. This is XP-era software whose official support list stops at Windows 10, so on a new laptop you are troubleshooting virtual COM port drivers before you even reach the car.

Where OP-COM is better

On nineties and early-2000s Opels its coverage is complete and comes with factory module descriptions; over K-line Diagnost only gives you identification, codes and clearing. Beyond that sit functions we do not have at all: key and remote programming, immobilizer work, variant coding, output tests. If the job is "program a key" or "enable this option", that is OP-COM or dealer equipment, and no free tool will finish it for you.

Where Diagnost is better

  • No hardware lottery. An ELM327 costs very little, is sold everywhere, and needs no firmware matching. Diagnost identifies the adapter from its ATZ and ATI response and tells you exactly what it found.
  • Free, with no license. No VIN counter, no per-model packages, no registration.
  • One tool for the whole driveway. Park a Volkswagen, a Ford or a BMW next to the Opel and the same program and cable read all of them.
  • Cars newer than 2017. Where OP-COM coverage stops, Diagnost keeps going, because recent GM platforms speak standard UDS.
  • An explanation, not a code list. The AI mechanic reads the modules and tells you what is wrong and what to check first.
  • History by VIN. Sessions are stored and compared between visits, so you can see whether a fault came back after the repair.

What Diagnost actually reads on GM cars

From 2004 GM cars run GMLAN. The high-speed half is ordinary CAN on pins 6 and 14, reachable by any ELM327 or J2534 device: the program sweeps the modules with service $A9, collects the codes and clears them. The low-speed half, single-wire CAN on pin 1 at 33.3 kbit, carries the body modules, comfort systems and part of the cluster. A plain ELM327 cannot reach it at all; you need an STN-based adapter with single-wire CAN, which by the manufacturer's specification means an OBDLink MX+ - the EX has MS-CAN but no SW-CAN. The GMLAN module was added in version 3.1.13, was written from documentation, and is still being verified on real cars, so treat it as work in progress rather than a finished feature.

Which one should you use

OP-COM still makes sense if you keep an older Opel and need dealer-level operations: keys, immobilizer, variant coding, output tests. Buy the genuine unit from an authorized distributor — a clone is cheaper by exactly the amount of risk you are taking on the board inside.

They do not interfere: different adapters, different drivers, different files. The sensible split is OP-COM for coding and programming on the old Opel, Diagnost for everyday diagnostics on anything else. Questions and answers

Does Diagnost work with an OP-COM interface?

No. The link between the PC and an OP-COM interface is proprietary and undocumented, and we do not emulate it. Diagnost recognizes the device when you plug it in and tells you what to use instead.

Which OP-COM firmware version should I buy?

There is no version that is right on its own, which is why the question never gets a clean answer on forums. The working combination is chip plus firmware plus software build, and sellers label versions loosely, so the sticker on the case is not evidence of anything.

Why did my OP-COM stop working after a firmware flash?

Online updates are written for genuine hardware. On a clone with a substitute microcontroller the update can write incompatible firmware and wipe the bootloader, which leaves a device that no driver will bring back. Recovery means a programmer and a soldering iron.

How do I tell which chip is inside my OP-COM?

By opening the case and reading the part number on the microcontroller, not by trusting the version label. Teardowns report genuine PIC18F458 boards, boards with substitute chips, and USB sections with counterfeit FTDI parts, and those three behave differently.

Does OP-COM run on Windows 10 or 11?

The vendor lists Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 in 32 and 64 bit. Windows 11 is not on that list as of September 2026. Diagnost runs on Windows 7 through 11.

Can a clone OP-COM damage the interface or the car?

The documented casualty is the interface itself, bricked by a bad flash. The real car-side risk is not reading codes but write operations such as coding or key programming over a link you cannot trust, because a half-written module is a much harder problem than a fault code.

Is there an OP-COM alternative for post-2014 Opel and Vauxhall?
