Diagnost vs FORScan: the alternative for the cars FORScan does not cover

On a Ford, FORScan goes deeper and we say so on line one. The real question is what you scan the other car in the driveway with.

Almost everyone who searches for a FORScan alternative already runs FORScan. They own a Ford, they have seen what dealer-level access looks like, and now they want the same thing for the second car in the driveway - the Chevy, the Golf, the 3 Series, the RAV4. That program does not exist inside FORScan, and its authors say so plainly. This page, current as of September 2026, is about what to do instead.

Who is who

FORScan is free Windows software built for Ford, Mazda, Lincoln and Mercury, model years 1996 through 2024 (seventh-generation Mazdas are partial or unsupported). It is not a code reader. It reaches every module on the car, runs actuator tests and service procedures, edits module configuration including As Built data, and programs PATS keys. The site and its very active developer-staffed forum are at forscan.org. A separate paid mobile app, FORScan Lite for Android and iOS, drops the Test and Service chapters and works with Bluetooth and WiFi adapters only.

Diagnost is free Windows 7-11 software - macOS is supported with USB and WiFi adapters - with a Russian and English interface. It is built the other way around: one tool for a mixed garage rather than maximum depth on one brand. It sweeps every module on any CAN car from roughly 2008 on through an ELM327, an OBDLink or a J2534 device, reaches pre-2005 cars over K-line, adds genuine dealer depth with coding on BMW E, F and G series, and ships a built-in AI mechanic that walks the modules and explains the result in plain language.

MS-CAN, and why a plain ELM327 is not enough

Ford and Mazda split diagnostics across two buses. High-speed CAN on pins 6 and 14 is standard OBD-II: powertrain, transmission, ABS. Medium-speed CAN on pins 3 and 11, running at 125 kbit, carries body electronics, the instrument cluster, climate and infotainment. Pins 3 and 11 are not part of the OBD-II standard, so a stock ELM327 has no physical connection to them at all.

Two ways around it. A cheap adapter with a mechanical HS/MS toggle works, but you flip it by hand, and operations that need both buses at the same time do not run properly on it. A dual-bus adapter - OBDLink EX, MX, MX+ or an ELS27 - has separate inputs hard-wired to both buses and switches automatically when the software asks for the other side. Never write configuration through a cheap clone

Reading codes with a cheap clone is fine. Writing configuration is not: the module sits in a transitional state for several seconds, and a dropped link can leave it with corrupt data and you with a tow to the dealer. Cheap clones drop long sessions, especially over Bluetooth. For any write operation, use USB and a named-brand adapter.

Where FORScan is simply better

On its four brands FORScan does things Diagnost does not do at all. Module configuration, including editing As Built data and central configuration: enable folding mirrors, change cruise behavior, remap steering wheel buttons, turn on features the car shipped with but never had switched on. PATS key programming. Powershift 6DCT250 adaptive learning. Actuator tests and service routines written to the factory procedures.

The base half is free: connecting, vehicle identification, parameters, reading and clearing codes, tests and service functions all work without any license. The extended license buys configuration, programming and PATS, comes in 1, 3, 5-year and lifetime terms, and can be trialed free for two months. For a Ford owner that is the best money in DIY diagnostics, and nothing here replaces it.

Where Diagnost is better

Exactly where FORScan prints "not supported." The second car, the spouse's car, the used car you are inspecting on a Saturday. Diagnost sweeps every module on any CAN make and explains what it found: engine, transmission, ABS/ESP, airbags, body, cluster, climate, with freeze frame, readiness monitors, live sensors and trip logging. It is not tied to a specific interface, so it runs on whatever adapter is already in your glovebox and finds all of them at once. It is free end to end. And it keeps a history per VIN, so you can compare this scan against the one from last spring and see what is new - useful before a sale, and useful when a fault is intermittent.

BMW deserves a separate line. Through a $10 K+DCAN cable on E series or an ENET cable on F and G series, Diagnost reaches dealer depth: every module, coding of hidden features by checkbox with an automatic backup and rollback, battery registration, service interval reset and adaptations. If your second car is a BMW, that is your answer to "what do I scan it with."

What Diagnost actually reads on a Ford

Stated plainly, without inflation. With any ELM327 or a J2534 device you get the HS-CAN modules: engine, transmission, ABS/ESP, airbags, codes with plain-language descriptions, freeze frame, readiness, live sensors and trip recording. With an OBDLink MX+ or EX you add the MS-CAN side: body control module, instrument cluster, climate. There is no configuration, no As Built writing and no key programming - that is FORScan's job. Which one should you run

One Ford or Mazda in the garage and you want to change how the car behaves: FORScan, plus an STN adapter. Several cars of different makes: Diagnost covers the fleet with one program and one adapter. No interest in module structure at all, just a check engine light you want explained: start with Diagnost's AI mechanic, which will tell you the likely cause faster than you can find the right screen in a specialist tool.

Running both

This is the combination we actually recommend: FORScan for the Ford, Diagnost for everything else. Both are free on Windows, both install on the same laptop, and they do not fight over the interface as long as you do not have them connected at the same moment.

The important part is that one adapter serves both. An OBDLink EX or MX+ bought for FORScan works with Diagnost as is, and the MX+ adds single-wire CAN on pin 1 for GM and Opel body modules - the scenario people normally go looking for an OP-COM replacement for, though that module arrived in version 3.1.13 and is still being verified on real cars. Questions and answers

Is there a FORScan for other makes?

No. FORScan covers Ford, Mazda, Lincoln and Mercury from 1996 through the 2024 model year, and the developers state that support for other brands is planned but not in the near future. For anything else you need a different program, which is exactly the gap Diagnost fills.

What is the FORScan equivalent for VAG, BMW or GM?

There is no single product with FORScan's depth on those brands. Diagnost is the closest practical answer for scanning: all modules, codes, live data and history on any CAN car, plus genuine dealer-level depth and coding on BMW E, F and G series through a K+DCAN or ENET cable.

What adapter does FORScan need and why MS-CAN?

Ford and Mazda cars from roughly 2003-2004 put body, cluster and infotainment modules on a separate 125 kbit MS-CAN bus on pins 3 and 11, which are outside the OBD-II standard. A plain ELM327 is not wired to those pins, so you need either a manual HS/MS switch or an STN-based adapter such as an OBDLink EX or MX+.

Is the extended license needed for module configuration?

Yes. The Windows version is free for connecting, reading modules, codes, live data, tests and most service functions. The extended license unlocks configuration and programming, PATS key programming and Powershift TCM adaptive learning; it is sold for 1, 3, 5 years or lifetime, with a free two-month trial key.

Can one adapter serve both programs?

Yes, and this is the practical takeaway. An OBDLink EX or MX+ bought for FORScan works with Diagnost unchanged, and on the MX+ Diagnost also gets the single-wire CAN bus on pin 1, which is what GM and Opel body modules live on. That GM module was added in version 3.1.13 and is still being verified on real cars.

Can one program cover my Ford and my other car?

Diagnost can scan both, but not to the same depth. On the Ford you get engine, transmission, ABS and airbags on any adapter, body and cluster with an MS-CAN capable adapter, and no configuration or key programming. On the other car you get the full module sweep for that make.

Does FORScan work on Windows 11?

FORScan for Windows is an actively developed desktop application; check the current system requirements on the download page at forscan.org before you install. Diagnost is tested on Windows 7 through 11, and macOS is supported with USB and WiFi adapters.

Is FORScan free?
