P0501 — Vehicle Speed Sensor A Range/Performance

moderate

What it means

A speed signal is present but implausible: it jumps, drops out at certain speeds, or does not match the value calculated from engine rpm, selected gear and the ABS wheel speeds. The ECU cross-checks these sources continuously. Typical symptoms are a speedometer that flickers or lags, cruise control that disengages by itself and automatic transmission shifts at the wrong moment.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Speed sensor with a weak or intermittent output as it heats up
  2. Excessive air gap between the sensor and the reluctor ring
  3. Chipped teeth on the reluctor ring or a slipping ring on the driveshaft
  4. Loose connector, corroded pins or damaged sensor shielding picking up interference
  5. Tyres of the wrong size or mismatched wheel speeds after a partial tyre change
  6. Worn gearbox speedometer drive gear or its retaining clip

Can you drive with it?

You can drive, but the indicated speed may be wrong and driver assistance systems can behave unpredictably.

This is the generic meaning. What about your car?
