P0446 — Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction

minor

What it means

The vent valve lets fresh air into the charcoal canister during purging and seals the system for the leak test. This code is set when the ECM sees an electrical fault in the vent valve circuit, or when the valve does not restrict flow as expected during the test. A blocked or seized vent valve can also make the tank build up pressure, so the filler neck hisses when opened and the pump nozzle keeps clicking off while refuelling.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Vent valve solenoid stuck, corroded or electrically failed
  2. Broken, chafed or corroded wiring and connector at the vent valve, usually under the car
  3. Vent valve inlet or canister filter blocked by dust, mud or spider webs
  4. Water ingress and corrosion in the valve after driving through deep water
  5. Faulty relay or fuse in the vent valve supply circuit
  6. Failed driver output in the engine control module

Can you drive with it?

You can drive, but if the tank hisses on opening or refuelling stalls, repair it promptly.

This is the generic meaning. What about your car?

The same code has different typical culprits on different engines. Tell the AI your make, model and year — it will rank the causes for your exact car and give you a check order.
