P0380 — Glow Plug/Heater Circuit A

What it means

The control module has detected an open circuit, a short or an out of range current in glow plug circuit A of a diesel engine. Glow plugs heat the combustion chambers before a cold start and continue post heating for the first minutes to cut smoke, noise and unburned hydrocarbons. Symptoms are long cranking in cold weather, white or blue smoke, rough shaky running while warming up and a glow plug warning lamp.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. One or more burnt out glow plugs with an open heating element
  2. Failed glow plug relay or glow control module
  3. Corroded or burnt power feed, loose terminal nuts on the plugs
  4. Broken wiring in the glow plug harness, damaged busbar between plugs
  5. Weak battery or poor engine grounds causing a voltage drop during preheat
  6. Failed ECM output or glow plugs of the wrong type or voltage fitted
