P0340 — Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

What it means

There is no plausible signal from camshaft position sensor A on bank 1. This sensor tells the module which stroke each cylinder is on, which is what makes sequential injection, coil on plug ignition and variable valve timing possible. The engine may still run in a batch fire limp mode with long cranking, rough running, reduced power and no cam phasing.

Likely causes (most common first)

1. Failed camshaft position sensor
2. Engine oil inside the sensor or its connector, leaking sensor sealing ring
3. Broken or chafed wiring, poor ground, corroded terminals
4. Damaged camshaft trigger wheel or a loose sensor mount
5. Jumped timing chain or belt, worn chain tensioner shifting the cam reference
6. Failed sensor supply or input circuit inside the ECM

Can you drive with it?

Short trips are possible, but starting may fail and the engine can stall, so repair promptly.
