P0300 — Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

What it means

Using the crankshaft position sensor the control module has detected fluctuations in rotational speed typical of misfire, but the misfires cannot be attributed to one particular cylinder. That means several cylinders are affected or the misfires wander, which points to a common cause in the fuel, ignition or intake system. Unburned fuel entering the exhaust rapidly overheats the catalytic converter, and a flashing check engine lamp signals a severe misfire.

Likely causes (most common first)

1. Worn spark plugs, incorrect gap or the wrong heat range for the engine
2. Failing ignition coils, coil packs or high tension leads
3. Unmetered air leak in the intake manifold or vacuum lines leaning out several cylinders
4. Low fuel pressure: weak pump, clogged fuel filter, contaminated or poor quality fuel
5. EGR valve stuck open, diluting the charge with exhaust gas
6. Low compression from burnt valves, worn rings or slipped timing

Can you drive with it?

Only to the nearest workshop, and if the check engine lamp is flashing stop and have the car towed: the catalytic converter is being destroyed right now.
