The voltage from the coolant temperature sensor has dropped below the permitted threshold, which corresponds to an implausibly high coolant temperature. The control module may run the radiator fans continuously, lean the mixture and retard ignition timing. The temperature gauge can read high or behave erratically even though the engine is not actually overheating.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Short to ground in the sensor signal wire
  2. Faulty coolant temperature sensor with an internal short
  3. Coolant or moisture inside the sensor connector
  4. Chafed harness touching the engine block or bracket
