You bought a $5 KKL 409.1 cable and now need something to run it with. Diagnost is free software for Windows 7 through 11 that talks to the cable directly: it finds modules, reads fault codes with plain-language explanations, and clears them. No virtual machine, no 32-bit legacy build, and no "set your port to COM1-COM4" rule.
The program works out the protocol itself. You do not have to tell it whether the car is a 1999 Golf or a 2003 Octavia - once the port is open it tries four K-line dialects in turn and settles on whichever answers.
What it reads, by make and year
| Make and years | Protocol | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat to ~2000 | VAG KW1281 | Module address sweep (engine, transmission, ABS, climate, airbags, cluster, immobilizer, comfort, radio), identification, VAG-format fault codes, clearing. |
| VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat 2001-2004 | KWP2000 | The same, with fast initialization instead of the 5-baud wake-up. |
| Toyota, Lexus to ~2005 | ISO 9141-2 / KWP2000 | Identification and fault codes for every module that answers, plus clearing. |
| Hyundai, Kia to ~2006 | ISO 9141-2 / KWP2000 | Engine and standard modules, codes, clearing. |
| Mercedes, Opel, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat to 2004 | ISO 9141-2 / KWP2000 | Identification and codes of responding modules, clearing. |
| Subaru to 2007 | SSM2 | Module identification only. SSM2 fault codes are not implemented. |
What the cable will not do, in this program or any other: coding, adaptations and basic settings (Diagnost implements those for BMW only, through K+DCAN), module flashing, immobilizer and key work, and Honda or Mitsubishi over their proprietary K-line dialects.
Check the model year before you install
If the car is newer than roughly 2004-2006 its diagnostics run on CAN, and a KKL cable cannot physically connect - there is no CAN transceiver inside it. The program will simply report that no modules answered. The last section says what to buy instead.
Three steps to a first session
- Driver. FTDI cables are picked up by Windows 10 and 11 automatically. CH340 and PL2303 need their driver installed separately; a PL2303 showing "Code 10" has a counterfeit chip and needs a legacy 3.3.x driver. Chip-by-chip detail is on the KKL 409.1 cable page.
- Install. Download Diagnost from the program page and run it. The EDIABAS package is not needed for K-line work - that is only for BMW functions over K+DCAN.
- Connect. Plug the cable into the socket under the dash, switch the ignition on without starting the engine, and launch the program. An FTDI cable is detected automatically; for CH340 and PL2303 pick the COM port in settings. Then hit scan and let it sweep the protocols.
When a module answers you get its identification - part number and software version - a list of fault codes explained in ordinary language, and a clear button. Sessions are stored per VIN, so a month later you can see whether a code came back.
How this differs from the usual options
VCDS-Lite is the standard answer to "what runs a KKL cable", and it is a fair one within its limits: VAG group only, pre-CAN cars only, and Ross-Tech deliberately does not support clone cables in its full VCDS product, which requires a genuine HEX interface. A feature-by-feature breakdown is on the Diagnost vs VCDS page.
Diagnost is free, runs on modern 64-bit Windows, and is not restricted to one manufacturer group - the same cable reads Toyota, Hyundai, Opel and Subaru. The trade is real, though: it does not do the coding and adaptation work that people buy a genuine VCDS interface for. If that is your goal, a KKL cable was never going to get you there.
Requirements
- Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11, 32 or 64 bit. macOS is also supported for USB and WiFi adapters. No Android or iOS version.
- A KKL 409.1 cable on any of the three common chips - FTDI FT232RL, CH340 or PL2303. About $5.
- The chip's driver: usually already present for FTDI, installed separately for CH340 and PL2303.
- A car with K-line diagnostics - see the year table above.
- Interface available in English and Russian.
If your car is newer
You need a CAN-capable adapter. An ELM327 in USB, Bluetooth, BLE or WiFi form lets Diagnost scan every module on roughly 2008-and-newer cars: engine, transmission, ABS, airbags, body, cluster, climate. For VAG cars from 2004 to 2008, version 3.1.13 added TP2.0 support - module list from the gateway, identification, codes and clearing - which is still being verified on real cars. For a BMW E series, the right cable is K+DCAN, which also handles plain K-line and therefore replaces a KKL cable outright.
Questions and answers
What software works with a cheap KKL 409.1 cable?
Diagnost, free for Windows 7 through 11. It cycles through the K-line protocols on its own - KWP2000, ISO 9141-2, VAG KW1281 and Subaru SSM2 - so you do not need to know which one your car uses.
Is VCDS-Lite still usable in 2026?
It still works within its stated limits: VAG group cars only, and only those that do not need a CAN connection, which means roughly pre-2005. Ross-Tech does not support clone cables and has not developed VCDS-Lite for years.
Does any KKL software run on 64-bit Windows 11?
Diagnost installs and runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 and drives the cable directly. The XP and 32-bit-only warnings printed on cable listings refer to the legacy software those sellers bundle, not to the hardware.
Can I read ABS and airbag with a KKL cable?
On pre-2004 VAG cars, yes - the program sweeps the module addresses and reads whichever ones answer, including ABS at 03 and airbags at 15. On cars from 2004 those modules sit behind a gateway on CAN and K-line cannot reach them.
Which VW and Audi model years does KKL cover?
Up to roughly 2000 over KW1281 and 2001 to 2004 over KWP2000. From 2004 the group moved to CAN, with some Audi models crossing over earlier. Past that point you need an ELM327 or a J2534 device.
Do I need a genuine Ross-Tech cable?
Not for Diagnost. A generic KKL 409.1 cable works, whichever of the three common chips it carries. A genuine HEX interface is required only by Ross-Tech's own full VCDS software.
Can I do adaptations and basic settings with a clone cable?
Not in Diagnost. Reading and clearing fault codes over K-line is supported; coding, adaptations and basic settings are implemented only for BMW through a K+DCAN cable with the EDIABAS package.
