P0461 — Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

minor

What it means

The fuel level signal stays within its electrical limits but behaves implausibly: the reading does not change after a large amount of fuel has been burned or added. The ECU compares sender voltage with the calculated injected quantity and the distance driven. On many vehicles this code also blocks the EVAP monitor, which needs a valid tank level to run.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Dead spot or wear on the resistive track at one particular level
  2. Bent float arm or float catching on a tank baffle
  3. Float saturated with fuel and sitting lower than the real level
  4. High contact resistance from corrosion in the connector or ground point
  5. Failed second sender in a saddle tank or a blocked transfer line
  6. Software fault or incorrect coding of the instrument cluster

Can you drive with it?

Safe to drive, but the gauge may hide a nearly empty tank, so refuel by odometer.

This is the generic meaning. What about your car?

The same code has different typical culprits on different engines. Tell the AI your make, model and year — it will rank the causes for your exact car and give you a check order.
