What it means

The engine control module has detected an electrical fault in the mass air flow (MAF) sensor circuit. The MAF sensor measures the amount of air entering the engine, and the ECM uses this value to calculate fuel delivery. With a faulty signal the engine may hesitate, idle roughly, stall or lose power, and fuel consumption usually rises.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Mass air flow sensor element contaminated with dirt or oil from the air filter
  2. Faulty or worn out mass air flow sensor
  3. Damaged wiring or corroded connector at the sensor
  4. Air leak between the sensor and the throttle body, or a loose intake hose clamp
  5. Poor ground connection or supply voltage problem in the sensor circuit
  6. Faulty engine control module (rare)
