If you already own a J2534 interface — a Mini-VCI, an Openport 2.0, a VXDIAG, a Scanmatik, a GM MDI or a Ford VCM II — your J2534 software for Windows can be free. Diagnost loads the vendor's pass-thru library and turns that box into a full-system scan tool: every module on the car, fault codes explained in plain language, live sensors and graphs. No OEM subscription, no gray-market software bundle.
The boundary is worth stating up front. This does not replace Techstream, ODIS or Xentry. Factory applications hold calibrations, programming routines and coding data that nobody else can supply. What we add is universal diagnostics through hardware you have already paid for — useful when the subscription has lapsed, or when the car in front of you is not the make the box was bought for.
What it reads through a pass-thru box, by make
| Make | Years | Available |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu | 2006+ | All modules on Toyota addresses, codes, live data, hybrid battery analysis: Prius 2/3/4, Aqua, Auris HSD, CT200h, Camry Hybrid, RX400h and RX450h |
| VW, Audi, Skoda, SEAT | 2008+ · 2004-2008 | From 2008, module scan on VAG addresses. 2004-2008 over TP2.0: module list from the gateway, identification, codes, clearing (version 3.1.13) |
| Mercedes-Benz, Smart | 2004+ | Engine, transmission and modules found by automatic ID-pair discovery (version 3.1.13) |
| Opel, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, GMC | 2004+ | Engine, transmission, ABS, GMLAN fault codes via service $A9 (version 3.1.13) |
| Ford, Mazda, Lincoln | 2003+ | Engine, transmission, ABS on the high-speed bus |
| Nissan, Infiniti | 2007+ | Module scan on Nissan addresses |
| Hyundai, Kia, Genesis · Honda, Subaru, Suzuki · Renault, Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat · Geely, Chery, Haval and other Chinese makes | 2005-2010+ | Engine and standard modules over UDS and KWP |
| BMW, Mini | any | Standard OBD-II engine data only; dealer depth needs a K+DCAN or ENET cable |
On top of the module list, everything that works on any car: freeze frame, emissions readiness monitors, clearing codes for the whole vehicle or one module at a time, trip recording with interactive graphs, a vehicle ID card (VIN, CALID/CVN, ECU names), module backups and session history by VIN so you can compare today's faults with the last visit. A built-in AI mechanic queries the modules itself and explains what it found.
Three steps to a first scan
- Install your adapter's vendor driver as administrator. The app finds devices through the registry key that driver creates, not by scanning USB — without it the box will not be listed.
- Download Diagnost from /app, unpack the archive and run the install script («Установить.bat») as administrator. On launch it enumerates every adapter present at once: USB, Bluetooth, WiFi and pass-thru.
- Plug in and switch on the ignition. The app checks voltage on the connector, picks the adapter that is actually on the car and starts sweeping modules.
Where this stands, honestly
Pass-thru support arrived in version 3.1.12 and, as of September 2026, is being verified on real hardware: the implementation follows the published standard, but we do not yet have a confirmed run on every adapter model. The make-specific modules for Mercedes, GM and VAG TP2.0 from version 3.1.13 are also still unproven on live cars. The software is free, so trying costs nothing — and if something fails, tell us the adapter model and the vehicle.
How it differs from the usual options
Against OEM applications the trade is coverage for depth: one program across all makes, but no flashing and no coding. FORScan also runs over J2534 and goes deeper on Ford than we do, while being limited to that one group. VCDS ties its license to Ross-Tech's own interface; here any standards-compliant box works. Compared with multi-brand scan tools such as Autel, the difference is price and hardware: you work on your own laptop with the interface you already own.
Requirements
- Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11. The application is 32-bit and runs on 64-bit systems with nothing extra to configure. A macOS build exists, but pass-thru is a Windows scenario — vendor libraries are published for Windows only.
- Any J2534 interface with its 04.04 driver installed. The device must support ISO 15765, the baseline J2534-1 protocol that even budget units implement.
- A car with a CAN bus, roughly 2008 and newer, for a full module scan. Older vehicles need K-line and a KKL cable instead; K-line over J2534 is not used yet.
- Interface language English or Russian. No account required to start scanning.
Not sure a pass-thru box is what you need in the first place? The standard, the connector and the individual devices are covered on the J2534 pass-thru adapters page.
Questions and answers
What software can I run on a J2534 interface?
OEM applications such as Techstream, GDS2, IDS, ODIS, Xentry and wiTECH, plus standards-compliant third-party tools. Diagnost is in the second group: it uses the interface for diagnostics on any make, with no subscription attached.
Is there J2534 software that is not an OEM subscription?
Yes. The standard only defines the interface between software and hardware, so nothing binds your box to the manufacturer that sold it. Diagnost is free, runs on Windows 7 through 11 and needs no registration to start.
Can J2534 software read all modules?
Diagnost sweeps the whole vehicle over ISO 15765: engine, transmission, ABS and ESP, airbags, body, cluster, climate. Standard UDS and KWP addresses are used everywhere, plus make-specific address maps for Toyota and Lexus, Nissan and Infiniti, VAG, GM and Opel, Mercedes and Ford.
Does it work with clone adapters?
It works with any device whose driver registers under PassThruSupport.04.04 and that answers on ISO 15765, clone or not. What clones sometimes break is the vendor driver install and firmware updates, not the pass-thru calls themselves.
Do I need the OEM app to program a module?
Yes. Reprogramming needs the manufacturer's application, a valid subscription and calibration files. Diagnost does not flash or program modules and does not code them over J2534 — it reads, clears and monitors.
How do I select the right J2534 DLL in the software?
You do not. Diagnost reads HKLM\SOFTWARE\PassThruSupport.04.04, takes the FunctionLibrary path from every registered device and loads the libraries itself. If nothing appears, the vendor driver is missing or was installed without administrator rights.
Why does the adapter only appear once it is plugged into a car?
By design. The app checks battery voltage with READ_VBATT and claims only a device that reports real voltage, so a box left in a USB port never holds the connection or blocks a second adapter.
