P0605 — Internal Control Module Read Only Memory (ROM) Error

serious

What it means

The checksum test of the module program memory has failed, meaning the stored firmware no longer matches its reference value. Because the operating program itself is suspect, the module may enter limp home mode, ignore some outputs or refuse to start the engine. The fault is usually permanent and does not clear by itself after erasing.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Interrupted or failed firmware flash, wrong software version loaded into the module
  2. Low battery voltage during programming or during starting
  3. Aftermarket chip tuning or a tuning box that corrupted the program area
  4. Corroded or water damaged module connector and internal board
  5. Failure of the flash memory chip inside the module

Can you drive with it?

Driving is not recommended: the module can drop into limp mode or shut the engine down without warning.
