P0601 — Internal Control Module Memory Check Sum Error

What it means

During its self-test the ECU recalculated the checksum of its program and calibration memory and got a value that does not match the stored one. The content of the flash or EEPROM has therefore been corrupted. Depending on which memory area is affected the engine may run in a heavily restricted emergency mode, fail to respond to the accelerator, or not start at all.

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Failed or interrupted software update, or flashing with the wrong calibration file
  2. Voltage collapse or a jump start during programming or engine cranking
  3. Corrupted flash or EEPROM cell after years of thermal cycling
  4. Moisture in the ECU housing causing corrosion on the circuit board
  5. Damaged solder joints from vibration, or a cracked processor die
  6. Electrical damage from a short circuit, welding on the body or reversed battery polarity

Can you drive with it?

Do not drive: the ECU cannot be trusted to control fuelling and ignition, and the car may stall at any moment.
